November 14th, 2023 Yemen, Syria and Cyprus Ranking

I must say that this trip was undeniably a success. Syria offered a plethora of captivating sights, yet it was Yemen that bestowed upon me the single best image. While I relished both experiences, the prospect of revisiting remains uncertain until travel conditions align with the ease associated with destinations like Egypt or Lebanon. That day remains elusive now.

November 14th, 2023 Financials

I spent 4039.55 USD on this trip. About 2,200 USD was spent on flights and another 1,500 was on the tour themselves. Syria was much cheaper than Yemen.

November 8th, 2023 Nicosia, Cyprus to San Francisco, California

3AM I stayed at the lounge until boarding for Istanbul.

6AM I arrived and took 40 minutes to get to the lounge. I spent another 40 minutes there before boarding for San Francisco.

November 7th, 2023 Larnaca and Paphos, Cyprus

7AM I woke Christabel to get the hotel breakfast. We then departed for Choirokoitia, which is a very unimpressive Neolithic ruin site. We spent 40 minutes there before driving toward the mountains. We arrived at the Kykkos Monastery at 11AM.

12PM We left for the Monastery of Saint John Lampadistes. It was three churches in one. One was from the 11th century. Another was from the 12th and the last addition was from the 15th century.

1:30PM I rushed Christabel to leave. We drove to the Platres Village, which didn't have many photogenic elements so we drove straight through to try to get a kleftiko at Strofi sti gefsi. Unfortunately, we ran into another restaurant that is closed for the next week.

4PM We finally arrived at the Paphos Mosaics. It was the last UNESCO site here.

6PM We drove back to Agios Georgios Alamanou Restaurant for seafood

8:30 We drove back to the Lordos Hotel and left for the Pergamos border at 10:30PM. It was only 15 minutes away. Christabel drove me there and we parted ways.

12PM The cab ride was 25 minutes and 50 EUR. I broke my 100 USD and paid the driver 55 USD. They let us into security at 1AM.

November 6th, 2023 Apamea, Syria

7AM We assembled to leave but Rad and Charlie weren't present. We found later that they were all at the hospital because she had to treat her asthma overnight.

7:30AM We left for Apamea. We arrived around 9:30AM and spent the next hour and a half here. The Greek Columns were quite well preserved and the Great Colonnade Is 1.8 kilometers long.

1PM We left and arrived near Homs where we said goodbye to our tour guide Ahmad Akhalaf. We then headed to Damascus before heading west to Beirut.

5PM We crossed the border without issues.

6:30PM We were delayed about half an hour to arrive at the airport. We still managed to get in quickly given the small size of the airport. We spent the next 45 minutes in the lounge. I let Nena get in and then we left to board.

9PM The flight left 15 minutes early and it was only a 25-minute flight. We rented a car to go to dinner at Agios Georgios Alamanou Restaurant. Unfortunately, they closed about half an hour before I arrived. We went back to Lordos Hotel and slept just after midnight.

November 5th, 2023 Aleppo, Syria

8:30AM I woke to leave to see the Old City of Aleppo. Much of it remains intact.

Aleppo Citadel

4PM We had a vegetarian lunch at a restaurant outside of the old town. I didn't like it because it was full of chickpeas.

6PM We stopped by an Orthodox Church. We then split up for shopping until rendezvous at 7PM. During this time, I only tried walking around to exchange USD to no avail.

9PM We were dropped off at a restaurant. Christabel ordered mixed grilled meat and I ordered a maria, which I had at Damascus's Gemini Restaurant. I wanted a Mortadella but they ran out for the day. I asked a kind man drinking with his friend where I could buy it nearby. He said he would call his friend. After 10 minutes, his order came and I thanked him for ordering before I left Aleppo.

11PM We went back to the hotel. The old owner was still awake and he showed me his cases and carpets. Christabel is an expert and she ended up not buying anything.

November 4th, 2023 Palmyra, Syria

7AM I woke up and left for the Mosque. We spent the next 45 minutes looking at the destruction and ruins left by the war.

8AM We left for Palmyra and got there at 10:30AM. ISIS destroyed much of the museum.

11AM We spent the next 2 hours touring what was left of Palmyra.

1PM We left for the waterwheel at Hama.

4PM We saw Hama.

November 3rd, 2023 Krak des Chevaliers, Homs, Syria

9AM We left for the Virgin Mary Monastery.

11AM We arrived at the village of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. We listened to the prayer in Aramaic and trekked through the mountain path following the steps of Saint Thecia. The remains were moved back to her home in Turkey.

4PM We left for Krak des Chevaliers, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was a finely preserved example of the Crusader castles.

Krak des Chevaliers

6:10PM We finally left for Homs. We arrived before 7PM and we still missed Saint Mary Church of the Holy Belt. We had dinner at the Julia Restaurant. The food was okay but I still got sick later in the night.

9PM We slept to leave at 7AM.

November 2nd, 2023 Busra, Syria

9AM Ahmad brought some bread and pizza for breakfast. We left at around 10:30AM. We arrived at Busra around 12PM.

3:30PM We finished around 3:30PM and had lunch for the next 45 minutes before going back to Damascus.

Eldorado Restaurant

6:30PM We arrived at the Church of St. Ananias to follow the steps of St. Paul. We then walked toward the food crawl street and had a handcrafted ice cream there. I then went to Hammam Al Malik Al Zahir for a bath at 40,000 SYP. There was 5 minutes of scrubbing and 5 minutes of massage. I then walked to Eldorado Restaurant. The food wasn't as good as yesterday. We had 3 types of kibbe. It was just different ways of flour grilled or fried with stuffed lamb. We walked halfway and took a taxi back for 18,000 SYP. We slept around 1AM.

November 1st, 2023 Damascus, Syria

6AM I woke everyone up to leave at 6:30AM. We got too close to the border and stopped for gas. Nena stopped to get cash from the ATM. However, the ATM machine ate her card and we waited until 8:05AM when the bank opened. We couldn't get it back as they were contacting their back office. We decided to move on. However, we arrived at the border late at 10AM and spent the next hour waiting for the visa. Apparently, that delay was costly because we arrived during shift change.

12PM We arrived at Damascus where we met the guide at the hotel. We had some street food.

2PM We went to the Al-Hamidiyeh Souq and had an ice cream at the oldest ice cream shop here. It had a strange texture.

4PM We visited the Azem Palace. We then visited the Umayyad Mosque.

6PM We then visited Asaad Basha Caravanserai. We then went to get a local beer. We had dinner had Gemini Restaurant. The lamb bread appetizer was good. We got back to the hotel at around midnight.

October 31st, 2023 Transiting through Beirut, Lebanon

3:30AM We had to wake up to leave for the airport at 4AM, 3 hours before departure. Christabel was threatening to bail on the trip. After we checked in, we sat down and tried to sort it out. I was trying to give excuses to each party but Rad just blamed me for stirring up drama. I took the hit.

6AM The Yemeni Airline plane arrived.

7AM We left on time. Our plane arrived after 9AM in Egypt. We waited for Christabel's check-in luggage for more than an hour. We then spent the next 5 hours at the lounge.

4PM We went to board the plane for Beirut. The flight was an hour and a half. We got ripped off by the taxi drivers at the airport. We didn't know that all the electronic transactions were already going by the black market rate at around 90,000 LBP per USD instead of 15,000, which was the official rate.

8PM We took an Uber to Babel Bay. It was very expensive and I was to spend more than 100 USD per person. We left for Mayrig but Christabel didn't like having Armenian food so we had dinner at Loris Restaurant. We shared some Lebanese bread and went home at around midnight.

October 30th, 2023 Seiyun, Yemen

8AM I had some coffee before we took off for Shibam Hadramout.

11AM We arrived at Wadi Doa'n. We passed the towns of Al-Hajarayn and Sif. We had lunch at Haid Al-Jizil. We met Kais there.

2PM After lunch, we continued to Buqshan village and took pictures at the the color palace before heading back to Shibam Hadramout for sunset. The traditional Yemeni buildings looked great as background.

6PM We got back and had dinner. Some drama was brewing. Apparently, Christabel asked if Rad didn't like her during breakfast, which is a subject of my jokes. Christabel also told them during lunch that she wanted a single room, suggesting that they had to deal with it. They weren't happy that they weren't given a choice and had to spend 110 USD on a single supplement.

October 29th, 2023 Seiyun, Yemen

7AM I got up and the group left for the tour. Our first stop was Al-Hawtah and we walked to the Sultan Al-Kathiri Palace. It was scorching today. I was nauseated the entire day.

Sultan Al-Kathiri Palace

4PM We went to Tarim Town and then took a few photos at a vista point for Al-Hawtah.

6PM We returned and had dinner at 7PM. We went to bed shortly after.

October 28th, 2023 Cairo, Egypt to Seiyun, Yemen

6AM I woke to grab an Uber to the airport. The rest of the group joined me in the lounge. I helped them get in. We boarded the plane just after 9:30AM. We took off at 10:20AM, about 35 minutes late.

2:30PM We arrived at Seiyun. We took an hour for the visa and another to get abaya for the female members of the group. We arrived at the Al Hawta Hotel and got dinner at 6PM.

8PM I went to bed but slept very poorly. I woke up multiple times but couldn't sleep much.

October 27th, 2023 Cairo, Egypt

1AM I arrived and tried to get the boarding pass. Immigration let me pass and get to Terminal 1. However, the police there noticed that the flight was the next day and sent me back to Terminal 1. I then took an Uber to Kym Hostel. They let me sleep on the couch since they had no more beds. I took a shower and went to bed a little after 4AM.

10AM I woke and went to look for a barber. I finally found one for 100 EGP. I had the haircut and then walked back to the hostel. I then found a tailor to fix the two pants for 100 EGP. I then took an Uber to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Initially, they didn't give me the student ticket but asked me to try inside, where I was successful at getting in for 120 EGP.

3PM I looked at the mummies transferred here from the Valley of the Kings. They were pretty cool. I left around 5PM to go to Ibn Hamido.

5:15PM Christabel and Patrick got there a minute before me. We ordered grilled fish, 1kg of shrimp and a soup. It was pretty good although I have got to say they put too much baking soda into this one.

7PM We took an Uber to the Bazaar and Christabel bought two abayas. We then sat down at a restaurant to drink some juice before going home at around 9PM. It took me nearly an hour to get a motorbike. The last one I got I couldn't even find. I found him after giving up to walk toward the hostel. He had cancelled already but he did take me back for free since I had no more EGP on me.

10PM I got back and went to bed around 11PM.

October 26th, 2023 Munich, Germany to Cairo, Egypt

4:45PM We arrived MUC early. The routinely available S bahn was not stopping at the airport. I bought a roundtrip ticket for the Lufthansa Express bus into Munich Proper. The bus wasn't running as often as they were supposed to, which is once every twenty minutes. I arrived with one just leaving. The bus driver said they were full. I waited for more than 30 minutes and arrived at Rimowa around 6PM. I picked up the luggage cases and proceeded to go back on the same path. I took the U6 back and got to the bus station at 6:30PM. They didn't have one at 6:33PM and 6:53PM. It took even longer to wait for the bus. People were taking taxis together. I would have if it weren't for the roundtrip ticket I bought. I think I waited for 40 minutes until the one that arrived at 7:13PM. I reached at the airport at 8:30PM. The tax thing took me around 10 minutes but there wasn't a queue at this hour. The security lines were light and I sent off the receipts necessary for the Rimowa duty-free refund. I went to the lounge opposite H24 and showered there. I remember the last time the Lufthansa lounge didn't let me in because my ticket was United-operated and didn't say it was Luftansa-operated. This time it was a charm and I showered quickly. I had some warm food there and got out of the lounge in 30 minutes total. I boarded the flight at 9:20PM. I am glad I had some warm food in the lounge because there wasn't any on this flight.

October 25th, 2023 San Francisco, California to Munich, Germany

6PM I took a shared Uber to SFO and stayed in the lounge until 8:30PM or so before boarding for MUC.

November 10th, 2023 Turkmenistan and Russia

Saint Petersburg was undoubtedly the highlight of this trip. Exploring iconic landmarks like Peterhof and Catherine's Palace was truly captivating. While the attractions were fantastic, the dining experiences could have been improved. The city's charm and rich history make it unquestionably worth a revisit.

November 10th, 2023 Financials

I spent 2789.44 USD on this trip. Unfortunately, almost 2000 USD resulted from the airline tickets given the sanction on Russia.
