March 22nd, 2010

After the debacle last night, I decided to leave for Cambodia for a week. I took a Mailinh bus from HCMC to Phnom Penh at 14:30, seat 10. It was a familiar route and cost 200,000 VNDs, which is more than I would have paid in Cambodia. The bus was cleaner than the ones locals take and I was mildly satisfied. What was not satisfactory, though, was that by being an American, we have to pay $4 more compared to an Argentian or fellows from other nations for our visas ($24 everything included).

I arrived at Phnom Penh at about 10PM. The city was pretty much asleep except for Mudele (riverside). I went to the very familiar Metro bar for a drink and 10 minutes on the internet at the adjacent restaurant. The moto driver waited outside and took me to several guest houses before finally settling down on Heng Lay. We spent around half an hour driving because he did not know where he was going and I paid him 7000 riels. He clearly was not happy but I needed to save money for the guest house, which was 16000 riels for a fan room.
